Saudi Arabia has appointed prominent Sheikh Saleh bin Fawzan Al Fawzan as the new grand mufti.
The decision came from King Salman, based on the recommendation of his son, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
Sheikh Saleh was born on September 28, 1935, in Saudi Arabia’s al-Qassim province.
He studied Qur’aan from Sheikh Hammoud bin Suleiman Al Tilal, who taught him the also taught him the basics of reading and writing.
In early years, Sheikh Saleh worked as a primary school teacher before joining the Scholarly Institute in Buraydah in 1954.
After graduation four years, he enrolled at the College of Sharia in Riyadh, earning his degree in 1961.
Sheikh Saleh obtained both his Master’s and doctoral degrees in Fiqh at the same institution.
He became a prominent scholar, speaking to the faithful via the ‘Noor ala al-Darb,’ or ‘Light the Way,’ radio show and via multiple books he’s authored and his television appearances.
His fatwas have been shared via social media as well.
Sheikh Saleh, 90, took over the position following the death Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheikh in Sepember.
Mufti Al Sheikh held the post for more than 25 years.
